Oh Whiteviolet my memory is still perfect as I remember all these details from my schooldays. Please have a look here, it may refresh your memory: http://www.deruyter.org/ENGLISH_SECTION_%20St.James'_Day_Fight.html

I must say we were taught a different story, but that is immaterial, the fact remains there was a battle at Chatham Laughing

Question: why, according to God Google, do the Dutch call the episode "the Battle of Chatham" whereas the English call it "the Medway Raid? (No wonder I was confused).

That's because the main battles were fought in The Lake District.

Unlikely, with the Dutch, most were in SE England or in the Colonies.

Very interesting comments. The Dutch fought all their battles at sea, we have an exclusive list of Admirals , which are still revered today for their heroic deeds.

Well, some of us think the present and the future are more important than the past.

Yet it's funny that the Dutch have two distinct types - ultraliberal, as in Holland, and ultratraditional, as in South Africa - both quite extreme.

Clary, didn't you realise that I was referring to important issues like clobbering them bloody Yorkies and chasing them into Ullswater, Windermere and Coniston.

Another clever observation by Clary about the Dutch, absolutely 100% correct, although I feel both sides could reduce their degree of extremism to function better.

Battles between Yorkists and Lancastrians are too small to interest me, but the colonial Anglo-Dutch wars have some interesting fallout, like Indonesians trying to speak Dutch, and the funny language of Afrikaans, as well as the happy state of most the world wanting to learn English and thus giving me a living.

Can't blame that Dutchman or Hollander for finding oil on the beaches of Indonesia before anybody knew what it was and he called it Shell!

Do you know Australia has discovered enormous oil deposits near the island of Timor, nothing is being done about them, so the Government can keep oil prices in line with the rest of the world and keep raking in their high excise on petrol.
