TV Video DVD Recorder and Sky connection

Does anyone know where I am going wrong. I want to connect my video recorder to my DVD recorder so I can put my videos onto disc. I have a sky box too. If I connect my Video to my DVD I can play videos but when I try to record and play back I get a blank screen. I have plenty of scart leeds but just don't know what to connect to what.
