Have given it some thought and I have come up with "hijacks"
Hi = for greeting
Jacks = for cards
Hijack = take control
Does above fit in with your puzzle. Perhaps someone else can confirm my suggestion.

Is the answer to 39a clue the cryptic being actors prompt to circle pound sign.
Much appreciated if you could confirm
lovatts cryptic 169 in England probably 101/102 in Australia

Obviously your Cryptic is ahead of ours as I can't recall seeing this question recently.
I would think "clue" is the correct answer.
"cue" for actor's prompt, and "l" for circled pound sign.
