I have my 30th birthday next August ('06). One thing I have always wanted, since age 14, is a tattoo for my birthday.
Thing is, before now, I could never decide what to get. Seeing as how tattoo's are fairly permanent, this used to put me off. I didn't want to be stuck with something I didn't like.
But now I know what I want. And many of my friends and most of my family have effectively told me that I am too old for a tattoo - that it's a sign of an early midlife crisis.
So I just wanted to canvass you good people, tattooed or not.
How old were you when you got your first tattoo?
Do you like tattoos?
Are they something you start young or never start at all?
All comments gratefully accepted, and all tattoo-related discussion encouraged. Cheers...
I say go for it. Don't buy into the age thing. If you get your first tat at age 30, it will shrivel and wrinkle much less than if you had gotten it at 16 .
I got my first one at age 24.
I like your thinking, LTX. The longevity of the tat(s) had not occurred to me before. Thanks for the info!
Two things that, for many vague and esoteric reasons, tickled my tattoo fancy were a plain coloured band of about 1/4" diameter around one forearm, and a modest ring of flames around the opposite elbow. The third design was a bit random - the Roman numerals XXX(but done in a Classic etched design, not a "porn" typeface!) to denote my 30th birthday.
Don't waste your time and money on such idiocy. You are going to have it for life, and that is toooooooooo long for such nonsense.
You could always get a snake tat on your face. This sends the message, " I have a tatoo".

I would put the first one where noone can see it. Then if you change your mind, you don't have have it showing. I was 45 when I got my first one. I have 6 now.

It also sends another message. One that indicates that your parents were first cousins and
STILL married and had children. Draw this 'design' on your skin in ballpoint - view it after time, as it fades and distorts you may not think it was worth the effort. A tattoo will also fade and distort
and won't eventually wash off.
Stillwater, you're a party pooper! If it's somewhere private, who's to know!
The lymph nodes of people with tattoos eventually turn black from the body's attempt to dissolve the ink. Think long and hard.
I got my first ink to commemorate turning 40, when I was 42. I've got a couple and am planning the next one.
Got one when I was in my late teens - another a couple years later. Doubt I'll ever be that young or that drunk again.
A tattoo says to the world look at what a stupid twat I am. It has nothing else to say.
Just an old fogey, eh Timber??
Think about your taste in clothes when you were 20. Would you wear the same stuff now? Then think about how you will feel in 10 years, when the tattoo is something with which you can no longer relate.......................but it is a drag to get rid of the darn thing!
I got my first at fifty. I now have four and a sleeve in progress. Be sure and get it where you can cover it with something for work purposes.
Other than that forget the naysayers. They're all constipated.
What is the deal with peoples nasty perception of tattoos? In many cultures, tattoos are a sign of maturity and pride. And the tattoos they get, are not little butterfly's on their ankle. They are full face or full body tattoos.
I think you (don and stillwater) are pretty judgemental and nasty for making the assumption that people with tattoos are trashy or otherwise mentally challenged.
Why does it bother you so much?

Your statement and the other statements were quite different. You are more of a "to each his own" kinda gal.
The others were more like "you stupid f*ck".
