Which emotion? I'm not sure they all arose for the same reason.

I suspect that fear is one of the primary emotions however, useful in kicking the adrenal system into high gear in preparation for fight-or-flight reactions.

Once the organism recognizes fear, then it probably recognizes the lack of fear, and (in the case of humans), gives it a name; comfort, safety, satisfaction. Then other emotions bloom from those and the cascade begins.

Evolution built emotions into the human design for some reasons. What they are is clear in some cases and less clear in others, but you may be sure that they serve to aid each creature's survival.

It's our conscience and feeling.
