A hot air balloon stays aloft because
a) hot air is more dense than cold air
b) the buoyant force F is less than the weight of the balloon and its load
c) the burners provide thrust to offset gravity
d) hot air is less dense than cold air
I am leaning toward answer d.
Good, because if a or b were true (they aren't), the balloon would stay on the ground. C doesn't work since the thrusters up on the balloon and down on the basket by equal amounts.
