panzade: Phil Ochs! Oh, yeah! What a tragic loss.
And another addendum for anyone who may be interested in finding out what the current state of the music is: WUMB is the public radio station affiliated with U. Mass. Boston. They're the only full-time folk station in the US (maybe in the world). They stream live on the web in several different formats at
www.wumb.org and they're a great station
Panzade mentioned Pentangle.
Great British folk group.
Also very good are albums by their single members: Bert Jansch, Jacqui McShee, John Renbourn, specially (oh, and of course, the album "Bert & John").
Another overlooked group, hippiesque folk (but originally blues) is The Incredible String Band. Their earlier (60s) records are the best.
And no one has mentioned The Steeleye Span.
Don't want to hijack, but does anyone remember the Club 47 or the Cafe Yana in the Boston area? True folk music of the 60s - that's where I saw Phil Ochs, Ramblin' Jack Elliot, and others!
Favorite female - Joan Baez
Favorite males at that time :
Tom Rush - Love his version of "No Regrets" .
and
Mickey Newbury - Have his complete collection. (Lots of train whistles and rain at the beginning of his songs) He and Baez did a great version of San Francisco Mabel Joy and 33rd of August at one of the folk festivals. Have it on record and love it.
She also duets with Kris on Hello In There on that album.
greenwich village scene I believe. It also did well at the whiskey-a-go-go in LA. The Eagles were strongly, STRONGLY influenced by the folk rock movement. Great music for sure
Did anyone mention Dan Fogleberg? Of course, there is the link to bluegrass Jerry Garcia, Old and in the Way or the real stuff, Bill Monroe and to what I call Hip Country like Gram Parsons.
Yeah Roxx...Old And In the Way is a classic album that shows off Garcia's love of folk music.
