Hmm can someone help me with the following questions?

1) How do you determine a matrix is an elementary matrix? For example if you were given:

1 0 0
0 1 9
0 0 1

Is this an elementary matrix? Rolling Eyes

And 2) I don't understand the wording of the following question:

http://tinypic.com/ejek4w.jpg

Does it mean its already in the echelon form so I don't have to do anything apart from just solving it for the variables? Or do I still have to put it into reduced echelon form?

Sorry for being such a pain and thank you for taking time to read my post

It's an elementary matrix. The second row makes it that.

Definition

Quote:
A matrix A is called elementary if the effect on B of multiplying B by A is to perform some elementary row or column operation on B. That is, if AB is the same as B , but with two rows or columns swapped, or one row or column multiplied by a constant, or a multiple of one row or column added to another row or column, then A is elementary
.

The second row of this matrix results in 9 times the third row element of a matrix multicand being added to the second row element.
