The clue is THICK ROPE. The word needed is: R_PE.

I've tried changing the words surrounding the clue but nothing else seems to fit. Closest I can find is TAPE but the R fits in with EERIE (clue is uncanny).

Any suggestions?

Crossword Help Needed
Hi Deem42

I think the word could be RAPE

The terms "cork rape" and "sma rape" are fishing terms used in Scotland for the word rope.

Hi deem42, it's nice to meet you!

Is the puzzle that you are having trouble with the 'goliathon competition' in the 'Lovatts Big October Crossword Book'?
If so, clue 140D. is 'thick rope'
with the answer 'rope' Laughing
i know this seems strange, but I think they have made a printing error in the clue, known at Lovatts as a 'Gremlin'.
Hope this helps, good luck!
Regards, butterfly Very Happy

Hi Dutchy, it's nice to talk to you again Very Happy
The 'goliathon' clues are usually very basic- there are no hard clues involved in it.
Lovatts have a 'gremlin-spotter' competition where you must 'write in' to tell them if you think you have found a possible 'gremlin' ( an error in one of their crossword puzzles). I sent in a letter to that competition last friday asking if 'thick rope' is a gremlin. If you phone, fax or e-mail in a gremlin you don't qualify, so I am not 100% certain that it is definitely a gremlin as yet. If you would like to phone Lovatts on their toll free number-1800 254199 to make sure, i am certain they will help you. I can't ring and ask them or I will be disqualified!
If it were the 'demon', 'stinker', or 'baffler' I would be looking for harder answers, but i have put 'rope' in as my answer for that clue- fingers crossed! Hope this helps you.
Warm regards, Butterfly Very Happy

Thanks Butterfly and Dutchy

Yes the clue is from Lovatt's October BIG. I was going to just put in ROPE and comment that I thought it was a gremlin.

They are usually so accurate and I thought they may be trying to be sneaky with the answer and that someone here may be able to help!

Dutchy- would be great if you do ring them to let us know.

Thanks again.

Hi Deem42 & Butterfly

Lovatts advises it is indeed a "typo", so ROPE is the correct answer.

Hi Dutchy,
thankyou for checking with Lovatts that it was indeed a typo, and for letting us know. Your help was greatly appreciated! I'm sure the 'gremlins' like to throw a spanner in the works every now and then to keep us on our toes! Laughing
Good luck to all entering the competition!
Regards, Butterfly Very Happy

p.s.- I am certain to catch up with you again soon! Laughing

Hi Dutchy, nice to talk to you again! Very Happy

In Lovatts Cluewords No. 58 'The Baffler', Carditel is right-

clue 'common perch' (4) = 'bass' (fish)

Bass- 1. Any of various sea perches. 2.Another name for the 'European perch'.

Hope this helps you Dutchy, post again if you get stuck and I'll do my best to help you. Good luck!
Warm regards, Butterfly Very Happy
