Two major Internet backbone companies are feuding, potentially cutting off significant swaths of the Internet for some of each other's customers.
On Wednesday, network company Level 3 Communications cut off its direct "peering" connections to another big network company called Cogent Communications. That technical action means that some customers on each company's network now will find it impossible, or slower, to get to Web sites on the other company's network ...
Some folks affected, some not - depends on who's backbone your ISP uses. Buncha grumbling going on, lawyers assembling all over the place. Meanwhile, the 'Net don't work.
I have noticed this!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I thought it was my connection (which is also, undeniably, slower than usual).
For the last couple of days I've been trying to get to gap.com or bananarepublic.com and simply haven't been able to (owned by the same company).
What will the resolution be?
Trying again...
Nope, still doesn't work.
Is that why?
Earthlink is my ISP.
Re: Gap et al, this seems more to the point (I use Safari):

i've had major problems. some of my emails left my mailbox, but were never delivered! a few potential disasters - as it sounds like a lame excuse: "Ehhh, I did send it, I swear, on the 3rd, it never bounced back to me" "Yeah, riiiiight."
I HATE that, hope it gets fixed soon.
Then there are emails that are not reaching me, or are coming day or two late. grrrrr.
My son draws a daily cartoon strip which he posts on keanspace, a site that suddenly disappeared. Now I know why.

Now I'm really scared! I need my daily ems, and I need to know that my ems are getting to their destinations.
Soz,
Download a free program called
TinkerTool.
Once you ahve it downloaded, open it up and under the safari tab, click the "Enable debug menu containing advanced options."
Then restart safari (You can quit TinkerToll at this point as well). Up at the top of the screen (the Menu Bar) there will be a "Debug" menu. Under the debug menu is a "User Agent" option. Go there and choose "Windows MSIE 6.0"
You should then be able to do your shopping at the gap.

Thanks for the the heads up, Timberlandko! That explains a lot. How absolutely annoying. Did they say what the feud was about? Is it physical network? Just curiuos.

The feud is about money. And yes, it involves physical, hardware internet backbones; think of them as on ramps.
That's what we figured. Someone must feel like their cyber-toes got stepped on. Can't we all just get along?!
Interesting article, McT-. Do you think that could really happen?
devriesj
cyber meltdown - seems like a big risk to what we have now.
Agreed. Do you think the internet can be 'controlled' internationally?
it going to be like the coldwar all over only in a cyber way
Oy, I hope not! But I suppose anything is possible.
it would be interesting to know:
1. who is the most invested in the internet back-bone
2. where does most traffic goto and come from
