No More Cyranos?

Cyrano de Bergerac is one of my all time favorite literary characters. He was a romantic idealist. I am too.

I don't think there are a lot of us left these days. I love the story of Cyrano.

Who are some of your favorite literary heros/heroines?

Cyrano de Bergerac was a real person before becoming a romantic character.

He was, at least, as bright as his eponym.

This is harder to answer than I expected. I automatically go to my favorite books, but they seem to often have flawed protagonists.

Maybe someone from "A Suitable Boy"?

Good answers, everybody.

One of my father's favorites was Don Quixote.

Really, Francis? I never knew Cyrano was a real person. I'll have to check that out.

Perhaps the age of literate swashbucklers has passed?

The present heroes are all hairy realists.

I'm old fashioned. I don't mind punching out the occasional villain, but every so often I'd like to flutter my eye lashes, brandish my fan and swoon when afflicted by brutal reality.

One of the reasons I'm partial to science fiction and fantasy is that in other realms heroes can still be larger than life and not need deodorant.

Literary... does that include graphic novels? Laughing

Anyways, some of my heroes or heroines are:

Richard Shelton (a.k.a. Dick, the protagonist) from "The Black Arrow" by Robert Louis Stevenson

Adam (inspirational hero), from "I am Adam"

Sherlock Holmes (despite his arrogance)
