Cycle Decomposition

Hello,

I am looking for methods of decomposing a dataset into a set of waves or cycles.

I do not want to use Fourier, as it creates an "infinite" set of wave to match the input dataset.

I would like to approximate the dataset by about 3-5 sub waves to be able to estimate and forcast.

What methods should I be looking for?
