AAH...But if just his TAIL were sent into the future, the present day dog would know where it would appear, and lie in wait.

Now wait just a minute. If the tail went into the future without the dog attached, the dog would go back in time -being that dogs are idiots- and look for it there but would instead find the tail of his grandfather who had similarly gone in the wrong time direction to retrieve his tail.
