Hi all! I'm trying to figure this one out:
You are sitting at home one sunny afternoon in your family room, which has a sliding glass door to the back yard. The door measures 8 feet by 8 feet. Unknown to you, there is a gigantic wheel rolling toward your house. The wheel has a radius of 60 miles (yes, miles!) and it is rolling at a speed of 60 miles per hour. The wheel will miss your house but it will roll right next to the glass door. Decribe what you will see as the wheel passes? In other words, for how long will you see the wheel passing by?
Your thoughts on this will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I get a bit over 51.25 seconds from the time it first appears to the time it completely disappears.
Absolutely correct!!! 51.26 seconds is the correct answer. How did you do this? Thanks!
On the wheel, find the x-coordinates where the y-coordinate is 8 feet (height of the door). The wheel has to travel the distance between those points plus 8 feet (width of the door).
