Hello! I would like to know if the past tense would be more correct in this context.

A friend of mine messaged me recently. and he told me about what happened to him yesterday.

While I was reading, I was wondering if the present tense is OK if you're telling a story that happened in the past.

This is how my friend phrased it: Yesterday, my mom asked me to help her with the groceries and I agreed, but I told her that I was just gonna drive her to the store and stay in the car as I was having a migraine. I also told her that I was just going to wait for her in the car; we both agreed.

While waiting for her, I tried to sleep, but it was hard for me to do so because the right side of my head hurts, and I can't lean on that side. On my left side, I am being blinded by the sun, so I cannot lean on that side either. I have to choose but none of these seemed to be the right choice, so I just decided to cover my eyes until i fell asleep.

In the second paragraph, shouldn't everything be in the past tense since all of those happened yesterday?

It's confusing, I know!

In the second paragraph, as you point out, everything happened yesterday. But when people relate stories, they often mix tenses like this. In this case, the writer is taking you back to that time and relating what happened then in the present.
