Happy Solar Eclipse April 2024! Are you doing anything special for the solar event?

I'm not really doing anything special related to the solar event. I don't have anything special planned.

What about you? Please help. Thank you.

@tsarstepan,

Unfortunately it might be cloudy in Austin. I'll drive that day to an area that's clearer in the path

@tsarstepan,
Yes, my coven and I stripped naked and danced under various trees on our block, much to the chagrin of anyone looking outside. We sipped elderberry wine while chanting to the moon goddess. We had a great time, thanks for asking.

@tsarstepan,
Northern Maine is due to get a pretty big snowfall this week. There are very few facilities in the area and the public safety people are rather worried – where are thirty thousand people going to eat? Or sleep? Or piss?

The snow and ice will help to restrict adventurous types from bushwhacking through the forest to find a prime vantage point but if it melts off, the mud will be a real problem. (People from the southern states may be surprised at how dangerously deep and sticky a slough hole on a seldom-used logging road can be.) There's no cell service in much of the area – it's not like you can call 911 and say, "Come and get me!"

@hightor,
You're in Maine?

I think we'll see it in SoCal - should start at 10 am and be finished at 12:30 pm, right after lunch....perfect!

There is a possibility of clouds over the Houston area. But it will get dark regardless. I will spend part of the time on my covered porch, but much of it indoors.

It's not visible here, and even if it was it would probably be pissing it down, like it is right now.

Don't miss the April 8 eclipse in NYC. It won't happen again until 2044
Quote:

New Yorkers need only look up — with eye protection — on the afternoon of April 8 for a view of the biggest celestial event of the year: a solar eclipse.

At 2:10 p.m., the moon will begin to cover the sun. By 3:25 p.m., about 90% of Earth’s closest star, which is roughly 93 million miles away, will be obscured. At that moment, the sun will appear as a bright crescent clinging to the dark edge of the black disc of the moon. The whole show will last about two and a half hours. While New Yorkers will need to head upstate for a total eclipse, the view should still be spectacular in New York City.

The last eclipse was in 2017. The next eclipse visible from the city will be in 20 years.

@tsarstepan,
Simple tips to safely photograph the eclipse with your cellphone

If you plan to check out Monday's total solar eclipse and the only camera you own is one that doubles as a phone, with a little preparation (and precaution) you might still be able to get some relatively good shots.

@tsarstepan,
We are in an area where the eclipse will be 100%. I have taken my 1911 out of it's hiding place and packed two clips. We are locking in for the week. We're expecting 50,000+. The trip between Austin and Marble Falls usually take an hour and a quarter, will take six to eight hours. I ******* hate it.

@tsarstepan,
The motels all went to $500/day, homes are being rented $2000/day - 5day minimum. There is a ranch with 50,000 reservations for camping, one with 30,000.

A town our size in Oregon - 7,500 population for the last eclipse (the one that Mango Jebus looked directly at without bursting into flames) went to 100,000. This will get ugly, the roads will be gridlock, and there will be deaths.

@tsarstepan,
I can't believe this world we're living in.

I say, let them all watch but they have to get their own glasses. Why should the prison provide them?

I suspect (at least on the prison's part) is they don't want or even can't handle (due to labor shortages) that many prisoners at one time in their common area/exercise yard. That there's a potential for a riot or escape attempt.

I ordered my glasses months ago. We're just outside the path of totality at 99.85 which simply isn't good enough! I want to see the corona. I scoped out where we have to drive to get in the zone, which isn't that far, and planned an afternoon of it with lunch etc.
It's all been looking like it would be just about perfect until this morning. Now the forecast shows total cloud cover. Fukcing Trudeau, eh?

Nothing like standing with 100,000 goofballs for 4 minutes of something that happens somewhere on this planet pretty regularly.
