We have a hanging nest in our front yard tree. It is now about 10 inches across and hanging about 2 feet above our heads. I'm worried about the small children next door. The insects are mostly black with some white and the have fairly thick bodies.
From your description, you have a hornet's nest.
There are all sorts of commercial insecticides for public use. Wait until after dark when all the hornets are home and sleeping the sleep of the doomed and saturate the nest.
I've read of setting the nest on fire instead, but I've never known anyone who has done this.
1/4 stick of 40% dynamite duc(k)t-taped to the nest works wonders.

Just make sure the tree won't fall on the house...
Um, Dys...would you mind chopping up a stick of dynamite and running over there and duct-taping that to the nest for them? I have a feeling they might hurt themselves trying something like that.
My advice: Sell your house and move as soon as possible.
(I
HATE the damned things.)
We have had many hornet's nests near our home, although not of the size that you have described. The insecticide manufacturers have this spray poison that is advertised that you can spray it from up to 20 feet. That stuff works very well, and you don't have to go near the nest.
