Last night I put on some Tom Waits, as I often do after stumbling in tipsy, girlfriend asleep. Lately I have been loving on the song "Martha" from Closing Time. The song is about two old lovers meeting up after 40 years. I can listen to it and feel what it's like to be old:

Operator, number, please:
it's been so many years
Will she remember my old voice
while I fight the tears?
Hello, hello there, is this Martha?
this is old Tom Frost,
And I am calling long distance,
don't worry 'bout the cost.
'Cause it's been forty years or more,
now Martha please recall,
Meet me out for coffee,
where we'll talk about it all.

And those were the days of roses,
poetry and prose and Martha
all I had was you and all you had was me.
There was no tomorrows,
we'd packed away our sorrows
And we saved them for a rainy day.

And I feel so much older now,
and you're much older too,
How's your husband?
and how's the kids?
you know that I got married too?
Lucky that you found someone
to make you feel secure,
'Cause we were all so young and foolish,
now we are mature.

And those were the days of roses,
poetry and prose and Martha
all I had was you and all you had was me.
There was no tomorrows,
we'd packed away our sorrows
And we saved them for a rainy day.

And I was always so impulsive,
I guess that I still am,
And all that really mattered then
was that I was a man.
I guess that our being together
was never meant to be.
And Martha, Martha,
I love you can't you see?

And those were the days of roses,
poetry and prose and Martha
all I had was you and all you had was me.
There was no tomorrows,
we'd packed away our sorrows
And we saved them for a rainy day.

And I remember quiet evenings
trembling close to you...

DAMN! If I could be blessed to write one THING in my entire life as beautiful as that song. Then I would simply sit and smile and wait to die, for cryin' out loud.

Gargamel, no offense. I'm glad that song gives you pleasure.

But to honest, those lovers-meeting-after-many-years songs don't really make me sad.

They just make me nauseous.

Dido's songs are always very deep and sad, not depressing - its her voice, very full of emotion and love all the time. "White Flag" talks about how she won't give up on love, even if he doesn't want her anymore:

"There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love, and always will be."

The Love I Lost
Artist: Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes

THE LOVE I LOST

I can remember planning
Building my whole world around you
And I can remember hoping
That you and I could make it on through
But something went wrong
We loved each other
We just couldn't get along
Take a good look at me
I'm in misery, can't you see

The love I lost (the love, the love I lost)
Was a sweet love (it was a sweet love)
The love I lost (the love, the love I lost)
Was complete love (it was complete love)
The love I lost (the love I lost)
I will never (never) no no never
(Never) love again ooh

I can't remember nothing, no no
But the good times we used to share
I'm so sad and lonely
Without you my life is so dead
I'm sorry to say
You go your way and I'll go my way
It hurts deep inside
The day we said goodbye, but

(CHORUS:)
The love I lost (the love, the love I lost)
Was a sweet love (it was a sweet love)
The love I lost (the love, the love I lost)
Was complete love (it was complete love)
The love I lost ooh ooh
I will never (never) no no never
(Never) love again (I'll never love again)
I will never (never) no no never
(Never) love again ooh ooh ooh ooh
I will never (never) no no never
(Never) love again

The love, the love I lost, ooh
The love, the love I lost

(CHORUS)

No offense taken.

I have to say some of the most moving songs appear trite without music behind them. If you just read the lyrics. Tom Waits is maybe the only person that can get away with that song. And it's not even the "all-these-years" element that I find moving. It's the chorus.

The most brilliant artists can make a cliche ring true and new.

For me it has to be:

Justin Haywood - Forever Autumn

The summer sun is fading as the year grows old
And darker days are drawing near
The winter winds will be much colder
Now you're not here

I watch the birds fly south across the autumn sky
And one by one they disappear
I wish that i was flying with them
Now you're not here

Like the sun through the trees you came to love me
Like a leaf on a breeze you blew away

Through autumns golden gown we used to kick our way
You always loved this time of year
Those fallen leaves lie undisturbed now
'Cause you're not here

Like the sun through the trees you came to love me
Like a leaf on a breeze you blew away

A gentle rain falls softly on my weary eyes
As if to hide a lonely tear
My life wil be forever autumn
'Cause you're not here
'Cause you're not here

Clouds across the moon by either debarge or the rah band is beautiful and depressing and ost music by Nick Drake is definately worth a look.

Saddest Vacant Lot in All the World
Grandaddy

She's in the kitchen,
Crying by the oven
It seems she really loved him

He's so drunk he's
Passed out in a Datsun
That's parked out in the hot sun
In the saddest vacant lot in all the world

Boldly going
Where he rarely knows
But he'll miss her when he goes

What a shame
As she drifts out of reach
While he's still drunk asleep
In the saddest vacant lot in all the world

When I Ran Off And Left Her
Vic Chesnutt

when I ran off and left her
she wasn't holding a baby
she was holding a bottle
and a big grudge against me

I tried to learn from the psychiatrist
how to stay calm and minimize risk
but I should've kept all those appointments
I'm gonna need em I'm coming disjointed

when I ran off and left her
I didn't look backwards
till I was halfway to Chattanooga
on the Atlanta connector
that's when I started flashing
on the little things that she did
all her little sayings and I started to wig
I should've kept all those appointments
I'm gonna need em I'm coming disjointed

The saddest, and most depressing song burned into my soul. This song was dedicate to Stephanie 7/20/89-2/26/93, at her funeral, and burial. I wanted her to be my little girl. Having seen her destiny I tried everything to change it, but I failed. Thank you sweet angel for showing me the strength of the human spirit.

Artist: Eric Clapton Lyrics
Song: Tears In Heaven Lyrics

Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven
Will it be the same
If I saw you in heaven
I must be strong, and carry on
Cause I know I don't belong
Here in heaven

Would you hold my hand
If I saw you in heaven
Would you help me stand
If I saw you in heaven
I'll find my way, through night and day
Cause I know I just can't stay
Here in heaven

Time can bring you down
Time can bend your knee
Time can break your heart
Have you begging please
Begging please

(instrumental)

Beyond the door
There's peace I'm sure.
And I know there'll be no more...
Tears in heaven

Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven
Will it be the same
If I saw you in heaven
I must be strong, and carry on
Cause I know I don't belong
Here in heaven

Cause I know I don't belong
Here in heaven
