Welcome to the wonderful world of Morrissey, with or without the Smiths.

Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now

I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour But heaven knows I'm miserable now I was looking for a job, and then I found a job And heaven knows I'm miserable now In my life Why do I give valuable time To people who don't care if I live or die ? Two lovers entwined pass me by And heaven knows I'm miserable now I was looking for a job, and then I found a job And heaven knows I'm miserable now In my life Oh, why do I give valuable time To people who don't care if I live or die ? What she asked of me at the end of the day Caligula would have blushed Oh, you've been in the house too long she said And I (naturally) fled In my life Why do I smile At people who I'd much rather kick in the eye ? I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour But heaven knows I'm miserable now Oh, you've been in the house too long she said And I (naturally) fled In my life Oh, why do I give valuable time ...

Here is a good one:

"Forever Blue" bt Chris Isaak

Nobody ever warns you, or tells you what to do.
She walks away, your left to stay.
Alone forever blue.

The stars have all stopped shining, the sun just won't break through.
Each days the same, more clouds more rain.
Your left forever blue.

Forever blue 'cause you love her, but she dosen't love you.
You did your best, life did the rest.
Your left forever blue.

No reason left for living, still there's alot to do.
New tears to cry, old songs to sing.
And feel forever blue.
And be forever....Blue

Home is Anywhere (You Hang Your Head)
Elvis Costello

Here comes Mr. Misery
He's tearing out his hair again
He's crying over her again
He's standing in the super-market shouting at the customers

Here comes Mr. Misery
He'll never be any good
with a mouth full of gold and blood
He's contemplating murder again
He must be in love

Chorus:
But you know she doesn't want you
But you can't seem to get it in your head
Oh and you can't sleep at night
And she haunts you when you go to bed
When you're tired of talking and you can't drink it down
So you hang around and drown instead
Home isn't where it used to be
Home is anywhere you hang your head

You hang your head
Home is anywhere
You hang your head
Home is anywhere
You hang your head
Home is anywhere you hang your head

Here comes Mr. Misery
Looking for a place for his mouth to shoot
Saying "You'd look cute in your birthday suit"
You tore him out and screwed him up
Like a bad page in a naughty picture book

They day ended as it began
As he was seconds older than
the man he was this morning
And the world has wiped it's mouth since then
Or maybe it was yawning

Chorus

I'll Wear It Proudly
Elvis Costello

I hate these flaming curtains they're not the color of your hair
I hate these striplights they're not so undoing as your stare
I hate the buttons on your shirt when all I wanna do is tear
I hate this bloody big bed of mine when you're not here

[chorus]
Well I finally found someone to turn me upside down
And nail my feet up where my head should be
If they had a King of Fools then I could wear that crown
And you can all die laughing because I'll wear it proudly

Well you seem to be shivering dear and the room is awfully warm
In the white and scarlet billows that subside beyond the storm
You have this expression dear no words could take its place
And I wear it like a badge that you put all over my face

[chorus]

I'll wear it proudly through the dives and the dancehalls
If you'll wear it proudly through the snakepits and catcalls
Like a fifteen year old kid wears a vampire kiss
If you don't know what is wrong with me
Then you don't know what you've missed

We are arms and legs wrapped round more than my memory tonight
When the bell rang out and the air outside turned blue from fright
But in shameless moments you made more of me than just a mess
And a handful of eagerness says "What do you suggest?"

[chorus]

Ben Folds Five - Brick

6 am day after christmas
I throw some clothes on in
The dark
The smell of cold
Car seat is freezing
The world is sleeping and
I am numb
Up the stairs to her apartment
She is balled up on the couch
Her mom and dad went down
To charlotte
They're not home to find us
Out
And we drive
Now that I have founds someone
I'm feeling more alone
Than I ever have before

Chorus
She's a brick and I'm drowning
Slowly
Off the coast and I'm headed
Nowhere
She's a brick and I'm drowning
Slowly

They call her name at 7:30
I pace around the parking lot
Then I walk down to buy her
Flowers
And sell some gifts that I got
Can't you see
It's not me you're dying for
Now she's feeling more alone
Than she ever has before

Chorus

As weeks went by
It showed that she was not fine
They told me son it's time
To tell the truth
And she broke down and I broke
Down
'cause I was tired of lying
Driving back to her apartment
For the moment we're alone
She's alone
And I'm alone
Now I know it

Chorus

The Verve Pipe - The Freshman

When I was young I knew everything
She a punk who rarely ever took advice
Now I'm guilt stricken,
Sobbing with my head on the floor
Stop a baby's breath and a shoe full of rice

I can't be held responsible
She was touching her face
I won't be held responsible
She fell in love in the first place

For the life of me I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise and
We'd never compromise
For the life of me I cannot believe
We'd ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmen

My best friend took a week's
Vacation to forget her
His girl took a weeks's worth of
Valium and slept
And now he's guilt stricken sobbing with his
Head on the floor
Thinks about her now and how he never really
Wept he says

I can't be held responsible
She was touching her face
I won't be held responsible
She fell in love in the first place

For the life of me I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise and
We'd never compromise
For the life of me I cannot believe
We'd ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmen

hey yeah
hey yeah
hey yeah

We've tried to wash our hands of all this
We never talk of our lacking relationships
And how we're guilt stricken sobbing with our
Heads on the floor
We fell through the ice when we tried not to
Slip, we'd say

I can't be held responsible
She was touching her face
And I won't be held responsible
She fell in love in the first place

For the life of me I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise and
We'd never compromise
For the life of me I cannot believe
We'd ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmen

For the life of me I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise and
We'd never compromise
For the life of me I cannot believe
We'd ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmen
We were merely freshmen

Anything from Alanis Morissette -
I find her voice and songs utterly depressing.

Last night I put on some Tom Waits, as I often do after stumbling in tipsy, girlfriend asleep. Lately I have been loving on the song "Martha" from Closing Time. The song is about two old lovers meeting up after 40 years. I can listen to it and feel what it's like to be old:

Operator, number, please:
it's been so many years
Will she remember my old voice
while I fight the tears?
Hello, hello there, is this Martha?
this is old Tom Frost,
And I am calling long distance,
don't worry 'bout the cost.
'Cause it's been forty years or more,
now Martha please recall,
Meet me out for coffee,
where we'll talk about it all.

And those were the days of roses,
poetry and prose and Martha
all I had was you and all you had was me.
There was no tomorrows,
we'd packed away our sorrows
And we saved them for a rainy day.

And I feel so much older now,
and you're much older too,
How's your husband?
and how's the kids?
you know that I got married too?
Lucky that you found someone
to make you feel secure,
'Cause we were all so young and foolish,
now we are mature.

And those were the days of roses,
poetry and prose and Martha
all I had was you and all you had was me.
There was no tomorrows,
we'd packed away our sorrows
And we saved them for a rainy day.

And I was always so impulsive,
I guess that I still am,
And all that really mattered then
was that I was a man.
I guess that our being together
was never meant to be.
And Martha, Martha,
I love you can't you see?

And those were the days of roses,
poetry and prose and Martha
all I had was you and all you had was me.
There was no tomorrows,
we'd packed away our sorrows
And we saved them for a rainy day.

And I remember quiet evenings
trembling close to you...

DAMN! If I could be blessed to write one THING in my entire life as beautiful as that song. Then I would simply sit and smile and wait to die, for cryin' out loud.

And, for the children coping with the plague:

"Ring around the rosie,
Pockets full of posie (to cover the stench of the sickness!)
Ashes, ashes (the corpses had to be burned)
We all fall down." (We all gonna die!)

Gosh dupre, I am so glad that we're past the age of
"Ring around the rosie" - I hated that song and my child
sang it with a passion Evil or Very Mad

I'd suggest "One More Hour" from the show "Ragtime." Also, "Alone Again, Naturally," by Gilbert O'Sullivan.
