What are your favorite "hard" science fiction books? I like Greg Egan (although I find that his themes get repetitive), and Greg Bear is all right. And I have heard favorable reviews of Benford's "Cosm".
Peter Hamilton and Alistair Reynolds are both pretty good.
Anything by Larry Niven or Jerry Pournelle will be about as "Hard" as Science Fiction gets, and their collaborations are breathtaking. Clifford Simak and James Blish are right up there, too.
I couldn't agree more about Niven, but get his stuff from no later than 1980. Also, the Niven/Pournelle collaberation, "The Mote in God's Eye," and the sequel were fabulous.
Another big fan of Niven, here.
