The square root of 164 to the nearest integer is 13.

My question:

How do I find the answer to such questions without using a calculator?

I remember learning that technique in my seventh grade math class. Of course calculators were not ubiquitous then. I guess no one teaches paper and pencil techniques any more.

They don't even teach trig and logarithm tables.

It's all a key on a calculator.
