I am recommending to the (Democrats) to pivot away from using the term"woke"

1. This is not about the actual definition of the term.

2. This is not about the real meaning of the term.

3. This is not about the history of the term.

4. This is not about any particular policy or issue.

5. This is not about the republicans hi-jacking and redefining the term.

6. Let me be very clear. I am very aware of the Republicans hi-jacking and redefining the term.

7. But that, or any of those other reasons I listed, has nothing to do with my recommendation.

8. This also has nothing to do with those nutjob MAGA republicans.

9. The reason I make this recommendation is because, When someone refers to themselves as "being woke",
that often comes across to a lot people as being arrogant and snooty.

10. My recommendation is not based on what is right or wrong.

12. Sometimes it's not about the meaning or the history of the word.

13. Sometimes, it's as simple as how the word sounds to the ear.

@Real Music,
The painful irony is... most Democrats aren't using the mostly obsolete term anymore. The white-supremacist right has drafted the term into their bigoted arsenal of word weapons. So? Your warning is pretty moot and late by ... so many years.

The extent that this apparently happens has eluded me. I suppose that's what I get for not using Twitter, and being particularly selective in my use of Reddit. It has the scent of our current internet culture though, specifically "slacktivism". Idk how you combat that stuff though. But I'll certainly grant that the American Right's phony battle against "it" has plenty to do with the arrogance, snootiness and self-righteousness that accompanies so much of that culture. We've all seen the image of the raging, bulging-eyed white girl, and how it's used online. Same thing really.

1. Why did you put the word Democrats in parentheses?

2. I don't use the word 'woke' unless I was asked what time I woke up.

3. I really appreciated snood's summary of the word's history. It was something I had not known.

@tsarstepan,
Agree with this. The only time you hear the term "woke" is when the radical right wants to stir up some racial animosity. I never hear the term used in a constructive manner by the left.

1. Yes, that is true.

2. But lately I've notice some democrats and progressive (pundits) starting to reawakened the term "woke". No pun intended.

3. Obviously, this is more as a response to Desantis and other MAGA republicans attempted weaponization of the word.

Yes, you are absolutely correct.

Why did you put the word Democrats in parentheses?

1. Because I am a democrat and I am making a suggestion for my party.

2. I will definitely vote straight ticket democrat up and down my ballot because I believe the Democratic Party policy positions are better for the nation.

3. When I observe something that might hurt democrats at the ballot, I will make suggestions that might benefit the Democrats.

4. This may end up being a nothing burger in 2024, but I don't want to take my eye off the ball or get complacent.

1. I have never used the term "woke" unless I was referring to the literal word.

2. I cannot recall ever hearing anyone in my day to day life using the term "woke".

3. I don't think people in the real world even talk like that.

4. The only time I've ever heard the term use is when politicians have gone on television and used the term.

5. Also when the host of some the news shows have use the term.

1. I also appreciated Snood providing more background and education of the word's origin and history.

2. That is definitely appreciated.

Still doesn't explain the use of the parentheses.

@Mame,
Perhaps it was aimed at society in general and Democrats in particular.

1. Sorry about that.

2. I do apologize for not answering the question.

3. I just misconstrued what was being asked.

4. I (incorrectly) thought the question was about why I was making this recommendation (specifically) to the democrats and not the Republicans.

5. There really isn't any one particular reason for the parentheses.

6. It's more to do with my writing style and writing tendencies.

7. I guess in this particular case, I used the parenthesis to immediately grab the attention of anyone who might be interested in (democrat) related discussions.

@Real Music,
Fair enough. The uses of parentheses are pretty set so I was confused at your use of them. Smile Maybe just bold and underline like you usually do, lol.

In a brief way, that actually does sum up the reason for the parenthesis.

@Real Music,
Thank you. Clearly I am not a Democrat because I'm not American, but I do share many political beliefs, and agree that as a white guy and a Socialist it's best to avoid the term.

I never used it anyway, the first time I heard it was when a right winger was using it in a derogatory manner.

I prefer progressive.
