Should it be “His health deteriorated” instead?

Grandmaster B S Huan, whose full name is Huan Beng Seng, died from urosepsis, an infection of the urine tract.

His health had deteriorated after he suffered a stroke in 2010, said his daughter, Ms Anjanette Huan, 38.

Should it be “His health deteriorated” instead?

Thanks.

@tanguatlay,
Despite the lack of speech marks it looks like recorded speech, and if that's the case you can't change it.

Otherwise you could say that after his stoke he was completely knackered and had pretty much had it.
