This question is found in my calculus 1 textbook.
I need to solve it by tonight. I don't know where to get started.
I know it deals with continuity and the Piecewise-Defined function.
QUESTION:
The gravitational force exerted by Earth on a unit mass at a distance r from the center of the planet is the following Piecewise-Defined Function:
f(r) = {GMr/R^3...if r < R
{GM/r^2.....if r is > or = to R
where M = mass of Earth, R = radius of Earth and G = gravitational constant. If F a continuous function of r?
Slopes must be the same
You have two functions that meet at r=R. The overall function is continuous if the slope of each function at r=R is the same.
ok
Thank you for your hint.
And you should find it is (hint 2)!
