Dolly Parton is rarely seen with her husband by her side, but that doesn't mean he hasn't been behind the scenes for the majority of her career. Parton and her husband, Carl Dean have been married for more than 50 years, but getting to that milestone hasn't always been an easy road to travel.
Should there be a comma after Carl Dean?
Thanks.
@tanguatlay,
My
opinion is that yes, the comma is needed.
You should know that my language is pretty much intuitive.
@tanguatlay,
Roger's intuitive answer is correct.
Quote:Parton and her husband, Carl Dean, have been married for more than 50 years, but getting to that milestone hasn't always been an easy road to travel.
The comma indicates the two slight pauses before and after the name.
@tanguatlay,
Yes.
The commas before and after "Carl Dean" indicate that you can delete the words "Carl Dean" without harming the grammar of the sentence.
In other words, let's say that everyone knows that her husband is Carl Dean.
In that case, you could simply write "Parton and her husband have been married for ..."
