A riddle

Imagine an untouched oasis where crystal clear water is surrounded on all sides by a shear white cliff. All is silent, nothing stirs, and there is peace.
Suddenly, the sky is filled with darkness. A portal opens over the water, and a foul monster descends with evil intent.
