A cylindrical can has a radius of 7" and a height of 15". How many gallons of milk can it hold? (There are 231 cubic inches in a gallon.)

Which formula can I use here?

You need to know the volume of the cylinder:
V = pi * r^2 * h
(r = radius, h = height). Using the radius of 7" and height of 15", you'll get an answer in units of cubic inches; convert to gallons to answer the question.

laprat,

Hello. I thought the volume of a cylinder is V = Bh, right?

Why did you say to use
V = pi * r^2 * h?

The answer is 10 gallons. How do I get 10 gallons?

V=Bh where B is the area of the base.

How do you calculate the area of a circle?

Drewdad,

You said:

"V=Bh where B is the area of the base.

How do you calculate the area of a circle?"

A = PIr^2 is the formula to find the area of a circle, right?

Okay, I used BOTH formulas but was not able to find the answer.

OK, here we go.

Volume=Area of the Base time the height of the cylinder.

V=A * h

V=(pi*r^2) * h

V=(pi * 7^2) * 15

V=(3.14159 * 49) * 15

V= 2309.06865 cubic inches = 9.995965171471166 gallons

Okay.

Your answer 9.995965171471166 gallons can be rounded off to the nearest gallon, which is then 10 gallons.

Good job.
