A rectangular picture 24 inches by 32 inches is surrounded by a border of uniform width. If the area of the border is 528 square inches less than the area of the picture, find the width of the border.

MY EQUATION SET UP:

(2x + 24) (2x + 32) = 568 less than 768

What is the correct equation that can lead me to the right answer?

You're very near

The area of the matt and the picture is right. It's
(2x+24)(2x+32)=Ap+Ab
and the Ap is 32*24
and you know that the Ab is 528in^2 less than Ap
so Ab=Ap-538

Put then all together and you'll get a second order polynomial (ax^2+bx+c=0), when you solve this polynomial you'll get two possible solutions for x. But one won't pass a sanity check.
