720 Error Prompt: could it be caused by a Windows Update?

Or a virus masking as an update? I have an older version of Windows XP, and no virus protection up, although I do have the Microsoft firewall, and I will go along perfectly able to go online for a coup[le of days, then get this prompt which says unable to connect due to a 720 Error. If I go back and restore to a previous date, it works again. For a little while. Until what I assume is the same download completes downloading itself and either one of my children or I neglect to cancel the prompt to update the computer. Any thoughts on what it is? Would installing Norton or something help? Is there some program which repairs this stuff as well as protects from it? Help![/i]
