What exactly is the directrix of the parabola, ellipse and hyperbola? What is the purpose of the directrix? Is it important to know when solving questions within conics? Does the circle have a directrix?

A parabola is the set of points equidistant from a line called the directrix and a point called the focus. The hyperbola and ellipse have similar definitions in terms of directrices and foci.
