Roman gods

Mercury---God of Commerce and Market, Zeus' Messenger
Venus---Goddess of Love and Beauty
Mars---God of War
Jupiter---Lord of the Sky, Gods, and Thunder, also Rain-god, Cloud-gatherer
Saturn---Protector of the Sowers and the Seed
Neptune--- Ruler of the Sea
Uranus---God of the sky. Father of the Titans
Pluto---God of the Underworld and Precious Metals

The exception, Earth, is named after dirt

The name Pluto was chosen in part to honor Percival Lowell. He was convinced there was a ninth planet, and invested a great deal to launch a search for it using photographic evidence.

This search led to success and found Pluto a few years after his death.

The fact that the proposed name "Pluto" had the initials PL made its choice certain.

Sir William Hershel, the discoverer of Uranus and two of its moons, didn't name Uranus Uranus. He wanted to name Uranus after George III of England, but was overridden because of the anticipated response of the newly independent American colonies. And Uranus it became.

Not entirely correct--Mercury is a god of the Roman pantheon, therefore, he could not have been the messenter of Zeus, who was the former Titan become God of the Heavens, and "King" of the Greek Pantheon. Although Hermes was the messenger of Zeus, in the archaic Roman and Tuscan (think Etruscan) tradition, Mercury was not the messenger of Jupiter, the rough equivalent of Zeus. For that matter, Hermes was not seen as the patron of commerce by the Greeks.

An interesting side note is the names given to the two principle satellites of Mars. Mars is the name of the God of War in the Roman pantheon; but Ares is the God of War in the Greek pantheon, and the two horse which drew his war chariot were Phobos and Deimos, fear and terror, which are the names given to the "moons" of Mars. The study of what is known as geology on Mars is actually areology, using the Greek derivative of the name Ares.
