Louis and his family are going to the zoo. The price of a bus ticket is $1.00, but the family has some coupons. If Louis pays full price, his wife pays 2/3 of the regular price, and the two children pay 1/2 of the regular price. How much will it cost for the family to take the bus?

You really oughta think this one thru.

Let full price be 1, then the wifepoo pays 2/3 and the kiddlums pay 1/2 apiece. Sum these up and that's the number of tickets.

This problem, as well as several others you have posted, are pre-Algebra. I have trouble believing that you are asking for help in Trig one moment and pre-Algebra the next. Are you trying these problems yourself before posting them? I love helping people when they honestly have a problem they can't solve, but if you are posting all of your review questions without giving them an honest effort, I think you are abusing the board.

engineer,

I thank you for your e-mail. This is the deal: I have a friend who taking pre-algebra who needs help with certain questions but he does not have a computer or webtv. I am taking pre-calculus but don't consider myself good enough in math to help my friend. Although it is true that pre-algebra word problems are not complicated, word problems are always the main reason why students seek math help.

I'm confused. In the teaching forum you state that you wish to be a math teacher, but right here you state that you don't consider yourself good enough in math to help a friend with "simple" (my term) math.

Another source of confusion: Are you Jack or Janet?

My concern.
J;

This particular problem worries me since it looks like something my 5th grader would bring home. I'm not trying to be an ass, but this problem is basically adding fractions. My concern is that people try problems before asking us to help. I would like to think at the end of the day that we are helping people understand math instead of giving them an easy way to get homework done without understanding it. If you (or your friend) are trying these and failing, forgive me my presumption. If you find that you cannot answer most of your homework problems, you probably don't need to be here, you need to be in your teacher's or tutor's office getting more in depth help.
