The NY Times is not a credible journalistic organization, they're a partisan political activism organization. It's not a question of whether or not the people in the article are figments of the imagination, it's that the NY Times uses all manner of trickery to misrepresent the facts of the story including omission, and flat out lying.
In fact, with perhaps the exception of CNN, the NY Times is the least credible "news" company in the entire U.S. They've been given several Pinocchios by fact checkers and people who cross reference source materiel.

Let’s look at that “force expert”. He looks familiar to me... Where did I see him before?
Oh yeah...
Berry Brodd was the same “use of force expert” who testified on behalf of former NYPD Officer Jason Van Dyke in 2018, in the case of Laquan McDonald.
Berry Brodd said it was a “reasonable use of force” when Van Dyke shot 17 year old McDonald SIXTEEN TIMES from 40 feet away as McDonald was walking down the street holding a knife - Not walking toward the police - WALKING AWAY FROM THEM.
Van Dyke was convicted of 2nd degree murder, and also 16 counts of aggravated assault.
Some people will defend ANYTHING a policeman does. They will ignore Chauvin’s immediate supervisor, his chief of police, the chief medical examiner who did the autopsy, 12 eyewitnesses and a half dozen other medical and law enforcement experts- and hang on every word a fraud like Barry Brodd says.
The only echo chamber, or ideological bubble, is people who aren’t Nazis. The notion that Glenn, Roger, Glitterbag, you and me are all of the same ideology is absurd.
The only thing we’ve got in common is we’re not Nazis or racists.
"Godwin's law, short for Godwin's law (or rule) of Nazi analogies,[1][2] is an Internet adage asserting that "as an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler becomes more likely."
This is how you can tell that izzy thing is a leftist bot, and not a real person. No real person who isn't completely ridiculous would compare anyone and everyone who disagrees with them to Nazis. Nobody takes those kind of people seriously, because they're a meme.

Gee, I don't know about that. I mean, when one guy puts his knee on the neck of another guy who's lying facedown on the pavement with his hands cuffed behind his back, nobody needs the New York Times to put a spin on it to make it look bad. He killed the guy!
Did you watch the video that showed that Chauvin's knee was on his shoulder, not his back?
Media outlets like the NY Times conspired to keep that video footage away from the public for over a year. If they're not lying, why didn't they show it and report on it? Just like how none of them mentioned he was high on fentanyl.
I did several searches and not many results came up. I saw it live when it was presented. This is the only clip I could find, but it does show part of what I was talking about.
This goes to show how the leftist media has purposely distorted and omitted facts in this case (and news in general). I watched this live when it was first presented. I know it happened.
Notice how the leftist media lies by omission this way, only promoting information it wants the public to see. This is bolstered by search engines like Google, which through manipulated algorithms, present a skewed version of reality. Reality as leftists wish it to appear, but not objective reality.

@longjon,
At what point during the arrest was that footage taken? I notice that Floyd was limp and nonresponsive as he was being rolled over, presumably to be placed on the gurney in the background.
Did you watch the video I posted? It shows some of it. There is more, presumably being suppressed.
The vantage point of the woman who took the famous video shown ad nauseum by the media makes it look like Chauvin is on his neck, but body cam footage shows that it's actually Floyd's shoulder or back.
Yes, I watched the video you posted. That's why I want to know at what point during the incident that footage was shot. As I said, it looked like the end.
