How to buy ammunition and firearms legally?

With the country in a rapidly deteriorating state, it seems nearly impossible to buy ammunition or firearms.

This seems very confusing to me, as the media and Hollywood have always perpetuated the stereotype that it's very easy to buy guns and ammunition in America. I remember the famous movies by Michael Moore where it was portrayed that Americans could obtain guns and ammo as easily as Happy Meal toys handed out for free with with the purchase of burgers and fries.

This is very obviously a lie that has been propagated with the intent of using it as a political cudgel. Intended to give the left the political power to disarm the working class of the country.

So the question I'm asking then is, what is the best way for law abiding citizens to legally obtain firearms and ammunition for self defense? A family with young children certainly shouldn't be forced to cower in fear of black Lives Matter thugs beating at their door.

Are there any tricks or secrets?

Thank you.

@longjon,
Step 1. Go to a gun store.
Step 2. Talk to store employee, tell her what you want.
Step 3. Select the products you want to buy.
Step 4. Fill out your background check paperwork (Form 4473).
Step 5. Pay

It isn't that difficult for most people.

@maxdancona,
It really isn't that simple.

Many states have protracted anti 2nd amendment laws which make it very difficult to obtain arms. Also ammunition is very hard to come by these days.

That tells me you do not live in New Mexico.

@roger,
nor in the US. Would that any state tries to "contract" access to arms ans ammo, there would be court cases lined up and the state would be quickly punished.
Right now, ammo is in short supply because of high demand and resulting"Scalping" by opportunist gun merchants

I order and I wait like everyone else. I always keep several ammo bricks in reserve and forego practice at the club till my order comes in.

Ammo began being in short supply after 2017 and several events.

This person obviously never developed the habit of critical thinking and relied on stereotypes to develop his distorted view of a culture which remains alien to him.

See the well-known, overused, and completely fictitious right-wing stereotype in action?

Notice the stereotyping in this febrile admission of paranoia and fear!

Again, notice the paranoia — obviously there must be a secret or one has to employ tricks! It apparently never occurred him that to note the huge increase in firearms sales and deduce that the increased demand for ammunition might put a strain on supply.

Shut up, be patient, and wait your turn in line like everyone else.

Lots of gun stores around here and shooting ranges as well which often sell ammo. There are often gun shows too if you want something a little less pedestrian.

@engineer,
Where I live ammunition is bought up in hours after it arrives in the stores. About 15 gun stores within 20 miles of me so yes a shortage of ammo of all kinds.

@RABEL222,
You set me off on a reading spree. Here is an interesting article discussing the shortage at vendors.

@RABEL222,
So in other words, I was correct. It is, in fact, very difficult to obtain firearms and ammunition. So Michael Moore (a leftist) lied about being able to get free guns in happy meals at Burger King.

So America, in fact, does not treat gun ownership irresponsibly. Another lie from the left debunked by simply looking to reality for confirmation.

Any meal with a gun is a happy meal.

Not really. You're taking your own limited experience in the midst of an unprecedented national health crisis and assuming it's always been that way. It hasn't. I haven't seen a shortage like this before. How many gun stores did you visit? How far did you travel? What size ammo are you looking for — let me guess, probably .25 ACP:

Here, you could have found your answer by doing a search. You're welcome.

That movie is nearly twenty years old. The pandemic has led to the current shortage of popular calibers which were easy to obtain prior to the shutdowns and general air of impending doom which scared the right-wing extremists so much last spring. I don't know about free guns at Burger King but Moore did receive a free hunting rifle from a bank for opening a time deposit account.

That conclusion doesn't follow from the fact that there's a temporary shortage of popular calibers.

No, another example of your tendency to jump to illogical and mistaken conclusions which confirm your pre-existing beliefs. Keep asking questions though — you may eventually learn something about life in the USA.

My dear Longjon... I think the joke is flying over your head. So I will let you in on it.

Burger King doesn't sell Happy Meals (Happy Meals are a product of McDonald's). That is why we are all laughing at you.

The fact that you are calling other people "idiots" makes it even funnier. Does that explain it to you?

@maxdancona,
Ah, so you find it very funny that a person would use a term that has come to be colloquially associated with all similar things?

Would you also find it to be a knee slapper if someone referred to off brand facial tissues as "Kleenex"?

Very hilarious indeed.

It also appears to have gone over several heads that I purposely mixed the two references to sound cheeky.

Reaction achieved.
