Would a comma be necessary in this sentence:

The project manager met with the insured this week, and we are in the process of scheduling the repairs.

It is not needed in the sentence as written. If you removed 'and'; then, yes it would be useful.

Sorry, but I disagree with Sturgis. Two independent clauses separated by an "and" require a comma to separate them.
