A friend just sent me this picture of her cat, Fiona, and I thought I'd share it with everyone.

No doubt. From what I understand a male calico would be worth a fortune. I have also heard that a male calico would be sterile. Ever hear that?

I guess I need to ask a vet if it's true or not. They say a male calico is due to genetic defect and I guess that's why they supposedly are sterile. But, you know how rumors go.

I cannot find any reason that a calico make has any genetic defects.

Okay, this is what I found.
And are all calico cats females? Well, the majority of them are. For very complicated genetic reasons, it takes two X chromosomes for a cat to be a tortoiseshell or calico cat. A male would have to possess two X and one Y chromosomes to be a calico cat. This can happen, but very rarely. According to a study at the College of Veterinary Medicine in Missouri, one out of 3,000 calico colored cats is male. This oddity occurs in humans, too. The males, in both cases, are usually sterile.
That is so cool. That would also explain why many of them do not reproduce.
Very interesting how the fur markings would be consistent (calico).

Hi flushd,
Intersexual?! Never thought about it that way. I have a calico here that is a surrogate mother for kittens, so I let her have babies. She has yet to have a calico kitten. Always gray and white or black and white or yellow but not one calico yet. Your statement made me realize that.
I like the tortoise shell calicoes, especially the gray ones.
They can have the most beautiful markings, can't they?

Okay, I am having some pretty naughty thoughts here. I am trying to think these cats are performing an emergency appendectomy or something in the woods, but IT AIN'T WORKING!
What beauties!

satt_fs,
Where do you find these awesome pictures of these cats? My office walls are getting pretty full because I am printing them out and hanging them up.
Keep them coming! I love them.

satt, I agree with Momma Angel - the pictures you are posting are great!
Mysan is a calico cat, too. In Germany, the female three-colored cats are also considered to be 'good luck cats' (Glückskatze in German).
Concerning the picture of Nisse and Mysan that I posted - this is the second picture I took of them when they were sitting there. In the first one, they are both looking out the window but I was way up on the stairs so the picture is a bit small. When I took the picture and started to go down the stairs, Mysan turned her head. I love that picture!
