I taught biology, chemistry, physics, the earth sciences (geology and meteorology included) and even a few years of Electrical Science. The most important factors towards teaching...any subject... are to have a strong desire to communicate new ideas and learning to other people along with a fascination or even passion for the subject being taught.
What interesting subjects to teach, sturgis, I wish I could pm you so as not to hijack the thread...just one more quick question, what did you major in to be able to teach such a range of subjects? He's been thinking of going into the earth sciences, but is wondering how many teaching jobs are available for that... anyway....
