I first heard cool beans and hard cheese from enlisted men in the Army Security Agency. They were mostly finishing up their 4 year stint, and were linguists stationed in Viet Nam for 12 months. Usually, they would be discharged within 18 mos, so they were stationed with us at Ft. Meade, the Army didn't want to assign them to another base if they would need additional training for a new assignment. Learned a lot of new expressions back then, some I can actually repeat.
