What's the deal with merch being advertised and sold on people's YouTube channels?

According to what I've seen, heard and read online, people aren't getting paid as much on YouTube through video monetization now as people used to.

Why has YouTube made numerous changes to their video monetization policy? They know people on YouTube want to make money. Why has YouTube gotten so stingy?

@tsarstepan,
Good. When I do get at least one cartoon and/or comics series going on YouTube, I'll probably get some t-shirts made up through Custom Ink.

I wonder if people sell merch on their channels on other video sharing sites - Dailymotion, Metacafe, etc.
