That’s not as extreme as it sounds. Most of what was played on Radio 1 and everything that was played on Top of the Pops were singles. Lucy in the Sky was never released as a single and wouldn’t have got much air time anyway.
The album show, The Old Grey Whistle Test only started airing in 1971.
I suspect it was more to do with pleasing the Mary Whitehouse brigade than anything else.
