Peloton: Understanding why Trump is president

The Outrage of the week is this ad. A rather attractive, ridiculously fit (to begin with) receives a Peloton stationary bicycle. She spends a year working out on the bicycle after which she is happy with this gift and the progress she has made exercising regularly (as she should be, those bikes are expensive).

There was no mention of weight, or dieting or anything else other than fitness and meeting ones goals.

Somehow this ad is offensive?

@maxdancona,
I didn't know anything about this until I heard them talking about it on Wait wait...Don't Tell Me! this morning. So then I had to find it online. I thought the woman on CBS This Morning summed it up nicely. Even thin people like to stay in shape and meet fitness goals.

@maxdancona,
Every sane person in America is scratching their head over the outrage precipitated by this ad, and yes, such outrage is part of the reason why Trump is president.

Heh, even the ad actress is in on spoofing it in a gin ad parody sequel.

From fitness addict to alcohol addict.

@InfraBlue,
There is a word for this type of ad (i.e. the gin ad). It is designed as a dog whistle, appealing (i.e. virtue signaling) to a specific demographic without anyone else understanding the message.

I forget the term for this, doesn't anyone else know it? Subaru used to do this to great effect.

@maxdancona,
Its funny because I do vaguely remember seeing this ad. I thought nothing of it.

Then I start hearing that this ad was offensive...I am thinking why?

Other than being overly expensive bike - it is no more offensive than many other ads.

I would not even think of peloton at all - until this controversy - so maybe in the long run it is good for the product.

The only thing that irks me is people threatening the actors in this ad - they are simply doing their job - acting. I guess she and the "husband" did a good enough job that people believe it enough to get upset at them.

@maxdancona,
Obviously she is beholden to her man that bought her an exercise bike despite the fact that she is already in decent shape.

Then, at the end she looks at him with puppy dog eyes and thanks him for allowing her to keep in top physical shape despite him being a lazy bastard.

It's like buying a housewife a blender or iron for Christmas. Despite it being something she may want/need Christmas is for guilty pleasures.

@McGentrix,
Damn it. That's precisely why Trump is president.

I doubt it. No one is going to get their wife one for fear she will take it as a subtle comment on her fitness/fatness.

Better to give a real bicycle since riding a bike outside is about a lot more than just exercise.

I wasn't thinking as a gift simply if someone was in the market for a stationary bike.

A real bike is nice however, does not work very well in the winter.

There are lots of men and women who want and would enjoy a Peleton bike. If they have a loving husband, it would be a thoughtful Christmas gift. What is crazy is that outraged liberals are so sensitive that anything that hints at any of their narratives causes a backlash toward the company.

@maxdancona,
What's even more crazy, is you thinking this is why Trump got elected.

Do you know people who voted for Trump? Talk to them there were 63 million Americans... you should be able to find someone. The craziness of what they call the "loony left" was a big motivation for many people to support Trump in spite of their misgivings about Trump.

You are are an argument for many voters to support a second term for Trump.

@maxdancona,
I know lots of people who voted for Trump. They say it wasn't because of a Peloton commercial.

Please tell... why do they say it was?

(If it was because of crazy hyper-sensitive feminists making a big deal out of everything... then maybe you just misunderstand the question).

@maxdancona,
They thought a business man who declared corporate bankruptcy four times, cheated on multiple wives and has a bad comb over was better choice than somebody who had actual experience in running the government.

I am assuming you aren't that dense (based in part on past experience). But let me spell it out anyway.

I am implying the ridiculous overreaction from outraged liberals turn off on everything from Peleton commercials to Classic Christmas songs, to men talking to women on elevators is a problem when it comes to the election. Middle Americans are turned off.

Hillary Clinton represented, in the minds of many Trump voters, the worst of the liberal elite. I know this because I had trouble voting for her (and I have always voted for the Democratic candidate).

Hillary was a horrible candidate. She was entitled, patronizing, elitist and hypocritical. Most other candidates (male or female) would have beaten Trump, she used her privilege and political connections to chase them out.

Ah, yes, there it is. Mansplaining why Clinton lost. Gee, maybe you should write a new post. Again.
