I've always wondered about this. I know that "O Sole Mio" and "It's Now or Never" have the exact same melody, but the words are completely different when translated. So what is the deal? What is the connection here? Did some songwriter steal the melody from "O Sole Mio" and just write completely new lyrics? Why would someone do that? Why wouldn't they just take the italian lyrics and translate the damn things!?
The second one is "based on" the first, according to a lyrics credit for the Elvis version.
...and "Surrender" was based on "Torna a Surriento"...
Now that I thnk of it, "Love Me Tender" was based on "Aura Lee",
a Civil War era ballad.
A pattern emerges...
...and "Bittersweet Symphony" was based on "Last Time." Or so the judge said.
OK, ya got me there.
<googling>
I think I broke the rules. It's not an Elvis song.
I knew Ray Charles had used, or did riffs on, old timey gospel tunes for "I gotta a woman" and some others, but it never dawned on me until now that Elvis was doing the same thing.
Just last week. There on the screen was a genius playing the part of a genius.
Joe(E-A7-B7)Nation
I saw Ray, and Joe said it best.
Kicky, everything was based on something. Just ask Isaac Newton.

VOLARE OHO CANTARE OHOHOHO
LET'S FLY WAY UP TO THE CLOUDS
AWAY FROM THE NOISENING CROWDS
WE CAN SING IN THE GLOW OF A STAR THAT I KNOW
WHERE LOVERS ENJOY PEACE OF MIND
LET US LEAVE IN CONFUSION AND ALL DISSILUSION BEHIND
JUST LIKE BIRDS OF A FEATHER THE RAINBOW TOGETHER WE'LL FIND
VOLARE OHO CANTARE OHOHOHO
NEL BLU DI PINTO DI BLU
FELICE DISTARE LASSU
E VOLAVO VOLAVO FELICE PIUN ALTO
E SOLE DANCORA DIL SU
NEN TIL MONDO PIAGIANO SPARIVO LONTANO LA GIU
UNA MUSICA GOCIA SONJAVO SOLTANTO PER ME
VOLARE OHO CANTARE OHOHOHO
NO WONDER MY HAPPY HEART SING
YOUR LOVE HAS GIVEN ME WINGS
NEL BLU DI PINTO DI BLU
FELICE DISTARE LASSU
NO WONDER MY HAPPY HEART SING
YOUR LOVE HAS GIVEN ME WINGS.
And I thought Dean Martin had done that!
I'm based on my butt right now.
The first time I heard the Doors' song "Hello, I Love You" I thought, holy cow, that's such a ripoff of the Kinks' "All Day and all of the Night". I still think so...
Good one, D.
How about the theme to "Raiders of the Lost Ark"
and the old Kent cigarette theme?
Well, George, just be glad your butt ain't based in Guantanamo.
Hey, d'art. I know the Doors but not the Kinks.
Another borrowed tune:
Danny Boy and Londonderry Aire.
The Kinks, Letty, were fairly popular in the '60s and '70s. The song I mentioned was one of their early hits. A later big hit was "Lola" ("L-O-L-A, Lola..."). Led by Ray and Dave Davies...
Thanks, d'art. That song must have been in my jazz daze. The only reason that I know about the Doors is 'cause of Val Kilmer.
