Tolkein was featured on Radio 4's Great Lives the other day.
Lots of asides, he saw action at the Somme, and the descriptions of Sam and Frodo's journey to Mordor with all the dead faces in the pools are straight from that WW1 experience.
As is the relationship between Sam and Frodo like that of a young officer and his batman.

I can see that happening. Especially with his current slate of Grammy and Oscar awards. He has a long career ahead of him.
