For me, they were actually more something my mother had.

It was only for going out, and you put them in your evening bag.

I can still hear that particular "snick" sound the bag would make when you closed it.

Mother didn't have a lipstick case. She kept her lipstick 💄somewhere in the case it was bought in, as a roundish tube. It was always a deep red. She used it rarely. Being me, I used to take the top of the tube off and enjoy the smell of the contents.

Mother did have a rat...for her hair. Do women still use those?

I couldn't see the picture you posted, but I remember those jeweled cases. I also remember those evening bags, also something more likely carried by older women. I mean older than me and who had more money than me. I have some fancy pants combs, mirrors and doodads from my Aunts who had a ton of that stuff. I must admit, they are fun to look at, uhhh I mean the doodads, not my Aunts.

And I agree with Sturge, those magical cosmetics my mother used had a lovely fragrance. I remember she had a few items from a Westmore line (Hollywood make-up artist) a liquid blush and liquid eyeshadow that were DEEvine.

Hair rats are (nowadays) foam rolls that you use under a hairstyle where you need a lift or a form to make the style stay in place

Wow, I always wondered how they did those gravity defying rolls. I hope they never come back.

They've sort of got them now.

They're used to make buns, inside a french twist, etc.

Those old hairstyles with the rolls always make me think the women are nazis.

I think of it as the Joan Crawford as Mildred Pierce look.
