lee dorsey - soulful
just put lee dorsey on the end cuz i got a cd of his the other day and i'm quite enjoying it at the mo. lets see hmm.......

ohio players, g love and special sauce, chili peppers all funky.

how would you class dr john? that whole new orleans funk vibe skips between funk blues and soul depending on what day of the week it is.

... Love Jones soundtrack...6. Inside my love - Trina Broussard

Is this the one written by Minnie Riperton-Leon Ware?

Synonymph-The very same. She does a beautiful job on it. That's one of the things that sticks out for me about this soundtrack - the womens' voices- just superb.

Benjamino - Chili Peppers, yes - some of my favorite funk! I forgot about them.

Heah um is!.
.....I had to try and catch up a bit on my life away from Ab2k. Benjamino, My Brother. I don't know two of the acts, you named, but I can tell from Metres, and Lee Dorsey, we right Cool here, Bro.

In the country field...Barbara Mandell..soulful...Patsy Kline..funky; Alabama..soulful...Oak Ridge Boys..funky; Bobby Gentry...soulful, but right o the funk line...Tony Joe White..so funky.

.....On the two O'jays lead singers....Eddie LaVert..soulful...Walter(I can't think of his nameright now) FFUNK! ....OJ progeny,Gerald Lavert..seems to equate screaming....As does David Clayton-Thomas,, of Blood,Sweat&Tears. but both are decentwhen they relax, and let it happen honestly.

Aidan, will you please let me know what you think of it after you hear it. I enjoyed it. I don't know much about the mechanics of music only what I like or don't like. I pretty much love all forms of music, and from all over the world too. The only one I don't like is heavy metal. Too violent, and erratic for me (its just loud stomping noise to me).

I agree with you too.

AE - I checked and we have the second volume of Jazzmatazz - The New Reality. I did listen to it and really liked it - -I wish I could tell you who plays on it but unfortunately, it's no longer in its original cover. But if you google it , you can get a play list. Anyway - really like Guru's voice and sensibilities - he's a great host I think. I'm gonna see if I can download the first volume - I listened to samples and liked them. Thanks for bringing it back to my attention!

I'd just like to second AE's recommendation. Check out "When You're Near Me" and "Trust Me" with N'dea Davenport vocals, and "No Time To Play" with Ronny Jordan on guitars. "Take A Look At Yourself" with Roy Ayers is pretty fine as well. In fact, there isn't a bad one on there. I even recommend the one in French!

Sorry I've been away so long. technical troubles.I was really enjoying the response in this thread....Matby I can prime the pump a bit.

.....Anyone remember Lulu? "To sir With Love", "Oh Me O My (I'm a Fool For You Baby" She is so-o-o FUNKY to me, On the basis of those two songs, a few years later, I paid Fifty-five(55) dollars for for an album of hers, and I had never heard the songs on the album. I never regretted it. Bonnie Raitt is funky too. I've never heard a note by her I didn't Like.

Loved that movie Booman - and the song too.

Bonnie Raitt - how could anyone disagree? She's incredible. I just heard a song (something about Home - I'll google it) by her on the radio. I was listening to it thinking who is this woman with such an incredible voice? It was Bonnie Raitt. I hadn't heard the song before and it was sort of a different style for her - so I didn't put it together with her. But her voice was just so beautiful on it....

When I discovered Bonnie in the early seventies, she was mostly unknown. I was in Tallahasee Florida, and a station played her often. I guess I was like you, "Who the HELL is that?" She plays a mean slide guitar too.

Yeah - a real role model for women musicians. Sad that more haven't followed in her footsteps. I can't think of any new female singer/ songwriters who can come close in terms of musicianship and style. Can you? If you have any suggestions, I'm always looking to hear new, good stuff.

i think Joni Mitchell's in a category by herself, regards singing, songwriting, playing, and even painting--she's attended art school, in case you didn't know--but she's not what i would call funky.

I agree. Again, can't think of any new female singer/songwriter that even approaches her level of talent. She can be kind of funky sometimes on her jazzier stuff.

*I did know she's an art school grad - she's exhibited and I think some of her art work was on her album covers if I remember correctly.

Well, there's Alicia Keyes, a fine singer, pianist, and writer. And also Joss Stone Floors me, although I don't believe she plays. She's funky. Norah Jones sings and plays piano.
