Does that mean that you aren't independent unless you live in the woods far from other people who might trample on your independence? The great strength humans have is that when we work collectively we can do incredible things. You aren't independent. If you kill someone, society is going to hunt you down. Depending on where you live, you likely can't even play loud music all night without the police showing up at your door. But if you agree to some very minimal restrictions, you can live in a society that can make your life dramatically better. The EU is an example. The UK gives up very little to have EU membership. In return they gain huge benefits. Some portion of the UK thinks they will be better pulling away from other countries and living in the woods. I can't see any benefits they actually reap from that and I can see all sorts of harm, but so be it.
