I mixed up my posts here, somehow. I thought I posted Donovan "The Trip."
This one is more or less about Lenny Bruce.

@panzade,
I love that song. It took me a while to find it online a few years ago and then I remembered the line mushroom omelet, Bonnie Bramlett and of course that's unique.

And here's some mucho obscurity - at 3:17, the background singers clearly sing, "Sedaka is back".

Probably the most evocative song I have ever heard about depression.

The most obvious ones sneak by. How could I have forgotten this?

Bruce Springsteen wrote:
The screen door slams, Mary's dress waves
Like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
Hey, that's me and I want you only
Don't turn me home again, I just can't face myself alone again

A fave from Springsteen (and I love a lot of his earlier stuff).

@jespah,

Which sort of made sense. Neil Sedaka co-wrote the song and was sort of making a return on the U.S. pop charts again. It was about then he redid his early 60s hit, Breaking Up Is Hard To Do - although it was much slower.

Speaking about Sedaka, here is Oh Carol which he wrote to/for/about singer-songwriter Carole King. He's had dated her in high school when she was still Carol Klein.

Not to be outdone, Carole King put out her own song as a response to Sedaka. Using the same music, here's Oh Neil

There is a lengthy introduction covering the plane crash, before Eddie Cochran begins singing, about Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and J P Richardson.

Ego Is Not A Dirty Word - Skyhooks namecheck Leonard Cohen:

Some people keep their egos in a bottom drawer
A fridge full of Leonard Cohen
Have to get drunk just to walk out the door
Stay drunk to keep on goin'
So if you got an ego
You better keep it in good shape
Exercise it daily
And get it down on tape
Ego is not a dirty word
