THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF DUCT TAPE!
It's Good For Everything!

Weekly World News
By TAYLOR BRIDGES

Most guys have a secret weapon hidden in their toolboxes. It's a fix-all that woman don't understand, but never underestimate. It's potential is limitless, and it's uses innumerable. It's God's gift to the handyman, and it's known as duct tape.

Tim Nyberg and Jim Berg call themselves "The Duct Tape Guys." The brothers-in-law have written six books with titles like "The Ultimate Duct Tape Book," "Duct Shui," and "The Jumbo Duct Tape Book," and have dedicated their lives to "The Ultimate Power Tool."

"There are basically two rules in life," Tim says. "If it's stuck and it's not supposed to be, use WD-40. If it's not stuck and it's supposed to be, use duct tape."

Their Web site, www.theducttapeguys.com, a tribute to the glory of duct tape, proves this simple theory. Only after surfing through section after section of phenomenal feats can one truly appreciate where Jim and Tim are coming from. Here are just a few examples of how duct tape can simplify -- or even save -- your life:
  • Who needs Post- It notes? Duct tape + any paper = selfstick note.
  • Energy saver: duct tape your light switches in the "off" position.
  • Duct tape a box shut for instant luggage.
  • Lower your receding hairline: Attach duct tape from your forehead to chin. When you open your mouth, your hairline will go back to where it used to be!
  • Secure yourself from chemical warfare by duct taping your windows shut.
  • Duct tape an enemy -- or even your boss -- to a wall or ceiling. You won't have to worry about them for a while.
  • Increase cell phone reception with a little duct tape on the antenna.
  • Fix a hole in your wall with just a few strips.
  • Fix a "talking shoe" with a simple strap.
  • Waterproof your car with ease by covering the exposed area with layers of duct tape.
  • Duct tape bows are a beautiful addition to any holiday gift wrap.
  • Reupholster a couch or chair with the beauty of designer duct tape.
  • NASA even used it to get Apollo 13 safely back to Earth!

Duct tape is a product that binds us all together with it's universal appeal because it works, says Duct Tape Guy Tim.

"People like stuff that works. There's guys like me all over the country overusing duct tape to the embarrassment or chagrin of their loved ones."

If it's supposed to move and doesn't, hit it with the WD-40.

If it's not supposed to move, and does, trot out the duct tape.

You guys are spelling it wrong. It's duck tape.

I know, the makers spell it wrong too. But it is duck, not duct. In fact, the stuff you call duct tape doesn't work well on heating ducts, the higher temperatures just cook it off, for heating ducts you use aluminum heat tape. Even on A/C ducts the stuff just peels off after a year or two.

But to return to duck. It comes from duckcloth or sailcloth, a canvas woven so tightly that water runs off of it. Put a little adhesive goo on duck cloth and voila, duck tape.

Now, for five hundred A2K points, what's gaffer's tape and how is it different from duck tape?

Bonus: What does the WD in WD-40 stand for?

HOTTEST NEW FAD IN TOWN . . . DUCT TAPE HANG-UPS!
By KATE McCLARE

ANYONE who's ever had to do an emergency repair to a ripped radiator hose or a busted window knows the magic of duct tape -- that amazing adhesive that sticks and holds with incredible power.

But the silver-gray tape can do a lot more than patch things, and the list seems endless. Prom gowns, sofa slipcovers, bug traps and even bandages are just a few of the things that have been fashioned from nothing but duct tape -- and a little imagination.

We found a lot of imagination at work in some duct-tape users, who prove just how strong the stuff is.

Properly placed, a roll or two can actually hold a full-size adult suspended off the ground!

These folks sent us some flabbergasting photographs of their favorite fastener at work, which we decided to share with you.

But first, we want to warn you that this is a pretty risky business, and you can cause some serious physical problems if you're not careful.

Some people have nearly suffocated trying duct-tape stunts like these -- so don't try any of them at home!

Medicine Lodge, Kansas -

Principal Mark Buck at Medicine Lodge Middle School challenged his students to read 400,000 pages before the end of the year. If they did, he would allow them to duct tape him to a wall. Each student got to put up one yard of duct tape for every 1000 pages he or she read. Obviously, they did their work!

WHen I had the short term IV in my arm I would use duct tape to seal the saran wrap (much easier to get off) when showering.
