Question for Dutch People

I would like comments from native Netherlanders that would help me understand my boyfriend better. I have a general picture of the Dutch from reading and posting boards like this. I have a b/f (who has been in America for 6 yrs) originally from Holland. It helps to know that there is a whole culture of people just like him.......haha. He's a great guy, I don't want to give the wrong impression.
He can be sensitive and very uplifting, positive sometimes, but also negative and cutting. He's open and friendly and loyal to a fault. I do love his no nonsense simplicity to life and he is accepting of respecting people's freedoms, even if he doesn't agree with others' opinions. He is very outspoken, stubborn (but I think it's charming.......haha......silly American) He can easily be interpreted as rude as compared to American standards. He doesn't mince words, speaks his mind. No "fluff" with it.
He has a touch of German temper, but then it's like nothing ever happened. I'm stubborn too so we understand each other. He has admitted he's basically a.... how do I put it not so bluntly......ok.........from his mouth......a white supremist. He's about as prejudiced as people from the South (U.S.) can be. I laugh about Dutch not liking the English and Indian people. I love Led Zeppelin and Indian music and you should hear him sometimes..........it's almost more than the Dutch ego can stand! He likes big cars and wide open spaces. Does that sound familiar?? He complains about America but who doesn't.........he has a great business head and does admit to being "thrifty" but he's not totally selfish and stingy. I can see though not wanting to spend more than is necessary. What do the Dutch think of Americans in general............honestly.......? Just curious. He is big on not being taken advantage of, fairness, loyalty, trust. He gets offended easily. He's big on wanting to be respected over being liked. He's a very strong person and I admire and love him for that. He is basically not very patient, but with me he is. Does any of this ring a bell? We live in the South and he says his observation is the women here are very friendly and open and sweet. One other thing that I don't care for that may be culturally explained..... He loves trash tv and all that comes with that. Could it be a desensitivity due to open tv in Europe? Don't know how to word that........I know Americans love their trash tv too. I don't care for wasting my time watching losers exhibit their dirty laundry like "Jerry Springer." I know it's more "open" there so the language is crasser and sex and obscenity is not a big deal . Do you think there is a difference sexually in cultures? I think you can be too publically open with sex to the point it dulls it for you. But on the other side of that, he has a no nonsense view of sex that is healthy I think. He's not very uptight about life in general except for turning a dollar. He's a very hard worker and has a great work ethic, almost NEUROTIC. I'd love to hear any comments, if you can shed any light to reasons behind these traits.
Thanks!

The only thing I can recommend is YOU making the trip to Holland to find out! Your sample of 'Dutch' people seems to be about one - he can't be typical of all of them.

Hmm, actually, I only can support Mr. Stillwater's idea - but that might be due to my "German temper" Laughing

I'm rather sure, people (women and men) differ here, there, in the Netherlands and elsewhere.

But might well be, someone can offer better ideas.

And, of course: welcome to A2K!

Sorry if this is off topic. . .
Hello everyone. I figured this might be the place for questions regarding all things Dutch, so here goes.

My father is from Aruba, and I am currently pursuing dual citizenship. I've lived in the States most of my life, except for a period when I lived in Aruba when I was little and when I recently lived in Japan teaching English. Once I came back to the States, I decided to get my Dutch citizenship. I've been corresponding with one of the staff members at the consulate near me in the US for the past few months, doing lots of paperwork as you can expect. Throughout the process it has been difficult to gauge my chances of acquiring citizenship or to find out how long the process takes to complete.

And I'd feel a bit forward if I just came out and asked the woman I've been emailing. She's seemed a bit tight-lipped in some of her responses to the questions I've had. I don't want to appear too impatient because, well, I think something as serious as citizenship should take time to process. Yet, my plans for the rest of the year are contingent upon whether or not I can move to Holland next year.

She recently wrote back telling me I can formally apply for a Dutch passport. Now, forgive me if this is the stupidest question in the world, but, does having a passport equal citizenship? And if she says I can apply for one, does that mean I qualify for citizenship or just that that is the next step in seeing if I qualify? I realize that it's possible that no one will have the answers that will reassure me, but I appreciate any thoughts. I thought maybe someone might have had a similar experience. All of this stuff can be so confusing to me.

Thanks heaps! Razz

Well, generally
- only citizens of that country get passports of that country,
- apllying for a passport means at least that one thinks, one had fulfilled all criteria for getting one.

So I suppose, you are nearly a Nederlander just now

Wow. I guess I can start to hope a wee bit. . .

Thanks for responding. You know how sometimes you get so involved in trying to make something happen that you can't even see it when it's starting to work out? Yeah.

Anyways. Now I've got to start learning me some Dutch. . .
