Which sentence is punctuated in the British way in regard to Duchess? If neither, how should it be punctuated?

Thanks.

@tanguatlay,
I prefer the first one, but often it comes down to style. It's not going to be a dealbreaker whichever one you choose.

Personally I prefer to italicise.

John said, “I have just finished reading Browning’s My Last Duchess.”

@izzythepush,
I have denied publications due to editorial 'italicising'.
I don't negate it - It is useful when 'seperation of visual' is necessary. Not when said 'seperation' is other than the authors', though.

In the UK - Wherefrom doth I spawn, The period (Fullstop) is ALWAYS post-operative.
Unless within the operative.

Mary had a frog.
"Mary had a frog.".

@mark noble,
I think those publications can live with your denials.

@izzythepush,
I agree - And it clarified, for me, what publishers were worth working with.

@mark noble,
Clarity isn't something I'd normally associate with you.
